Our online assessment portal for Career Progression Gateway (CPG) has been designed specifically for use in the UK FRS. All exercises are available in a version relevant for support staff use.

Case Study

The case study involves a fictitious situation in which the candidate will be required to read through information including emails, data and articles, and produce a written response to topics raised.

Group Manager – Dorling FRS

The context is a fictitious Fire & Rescue Service.

Overview

The candidate assumes the role of a generic Group Manager in fictitious Dorling Fire & Rescue Service. A partnership group aimed at developing solutions to support certain vulnerable demographic groups was set up but has encountered problems. The candidate must review all the information supplied and draft an outline proposal evaluating the situation and making recommendations for improving delivery of objectives.

Group Manager – Arlingham FRS

The context is a fictitious Fire & Rescue Service.

Overview

The candidate assumes the role of a generic Group Manager in fictitious Arlingham Fire & Rescue Service. Concerns have been raised over Arlingham’s commitment to a recently introduced agenda on sustainability and climate change. The candidate is tasked with reviewing FRS performance related to the initiative and outlining suggestions for tackling problem areas.

Video/ Telephone Roleplay

The role-play requires the candidate to read through a scenario and make notes before conducting a video/ telephone call to discuss the issues. There is an option to conduct this discussion via video call if preferred.

Group Manager – Dorling FRS

The context is a fictitious Fire & Rescue Service.

The candidate assumes the role of a generic Group Manager for fictional Dorling FRS. The candidate has received an email about a Station Manager from a community protection team. This group works with external partners to implement initiatives for risk reduction. There has been some dissatisfaction amongst crew members regarding a Station Manager involved, which appears to be having a knock-on impact on service delivery. During the role-play, the candidate must address all the issues involved in the scenario and identify ways forward to ensure improvement.

The candidate has been asked to join a partnership forum which runs campaigns targeted at supporting the local community. The candidate should work collaboratively with the role-player to agree requirements and priorities in line with FRS objectives, as well as to identify potential risks and next steps.
